They Pulled a Dog from a Drainage Pipe After 4 Days — Vets Said It Was Already Too Late

It started with a faint whimper that a jogger almost didn’t hear. Somewhere beneath the park in Riverside, California, a dog was trapped inside a narrow underground drainage pipe. By the time animal rescue teams arrived, the dog — a young black Labrador — had already been inside for an estimated four days. The pipe was 14 inches wide. No adult could fit inside. For six hours, rescue workers tried everything — cameras, food on strings, gentle water flow to guide the dog toward an exit. Nothing worked. Then a 9-year-old boy named Tyler, whose father was one of the rescue workers, asked if he could try. Thin enough to crawl several feet into the pipe, Tyler spoke softly to the dog for nearly 20 minutes before the Lab slowly, painfully began inching forward. When the dog finally emerged — dehydrated, thin, but alive — the crowd that had gathered erupted. Vets who examined her said another 24 hours would have been fatal. The Lab was named Tyler by shelter staff. The boy visits her every weekend. “She just needed someone small enough to go get her,” Tyler shrugged when reporters asked about his bravery.
