Every morning at exactly 8AM, Duke walks to the front door of the house on Maple Street in Portland and sits down. He waits for one hour. Sometimes two. His owner, 79-year-old Harold Greene, passed away quietly in his sleep eight months ago. Duke has not stopped waiting since. Harold’s daughter Sarah moved in to care for the house and took Duke in without hesitation. But nothing she does seems to fill the space her father left. “He still sleeps on dad’s side of the bed,” Sarah told us, her voice breaking. “He still carries dad’s old slipper around. And every single morning he goes to that door.” Neighbors on the street have begun leaving small treats on the porch for Duke. One elderly woman across the street said she cries every time she sees him sitting there. “That dog loved my father more purely than most humans love anything,” Sarah said. “I don’t have the heart to stop him from waiting. Maybe in his mind, dad is just taking a long time to come home.” Duke is 11 years old. He has never missed a morning.
